On Monday, Martin Le-May, an East London hobby photographer, captured a photo of a baby weasel hitching a ride on the back of an European green woodpecker. Unfortunately, the weasel was not enjoying the ride with the woodpecker. It was trying to eat the bird.
The photographer was walking in the Hornchurch Country Park in East London with his wife Ann, when they heard the distressed squawking. He saw the green woodpecker and quickly pointed out the bird to his wife. Both of them trained their binoculars, noticing that the bird was hopping unnaturally.
It didn’t take them long to realize that the bird had a small mammal on its back, Le-May told Buzzfeed in an email. It was quite clear that the woodpecker was struggling for its life. Le-May and his wife were able to temporarily distract the weasel. The poor woodpecker took the advantage of this opportunity and flew into the bushes, while the hungry weasel vanished into the long grass.
