In the pilot episode of the show that has long been put away, Lois sported blonde hair. This is why Chris has blonde hair and meg is a brunette like Peter. The kids actually take after their parents in the way they are drawn, or least they take after the parents the way they were originally drawn.
While Seth MacFarlane voices a number of the characters on the show, including Brian, William H. Macy tried out for the role of the spunky dog when the show was just getting started.
The show’s producers have never said why Macy didn’t get the role, but it’s a safe bet MacFarlane wanted complete control over one of the show’s most popular characters.
